What We Do

Environmental Learning

Erin1.jpg

Our centre is the perfect place to connect people with nature in a unique way. Through personal interactions with our birds and the surrounding wetlands we can help bring awareness to the changing needs of our environment. Our programming helps children and adults gain the skills and knowledge they need to take positive actions to support their local ecosystems both now and in the future.

Habitat Enhancement

We have undertaken several habitat enhancement projects around our site that help to improve our local environment by strengthening wetland biodiversity.

Some of these projects are listed below:

  • Artificial Nest Boxes

  • Duck Nesting Tubes

  • Bat House

  • Tree Planting

  • Shoreline Erosion Mitigation

  • Native Flower Gardens

Rescue & Release

The primary focus of our organization is rescue and release of injured hawks, falcons, eagles, owls and vultures. Our goal is to work cooperatively with Alberta Fish & Wildlife to give birds in need a second chance of life back in the wild.Although most birds come from the southern Alberta region they have been sent to us from across Canada. As Alberta’s first non-government operated rehabilitation facility, we have been carrying out our volunteer wildlife rescue work everyday since 1983.

Artificial Nests

21.jpg

Around our site we have over 100 different artificial nest boxes for a variety of wild bird species like, Tree Swallows, House Wrens, Black-capped Chickadees, Northern Flickers, American Kestrel Falcons, and more! These nest boxes were generously sponsored by FortisAlberta and built by local company, Prairie Bird Nest Boxes.

Providing artificial nest boxes, along with natural habitat enhancements, ensures wild species have access to safe and reliable nesting and roosting sites, which are often in short supply due to loss of natural habitat and competition from invasive species.

While walking our shoreline pathways, you may also see several duck nesting tubes scattered throughout our ponds. These nesting tubes were built by our staff to provide safe nesting sites for native waterfowl like Mallard ducks.
